When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first painting
on the refrigerator, and I wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you feed a stray
cat, and I thought it was good to be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite
cake for me, and I knew that little things are special things.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I heard you say
a prayer, and I believed there is a God I could always talk to.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I felt you kiss
me goodnight, and I felt loved.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned
that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared and
I wanted to be everything that I could be.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked... and wanted to say thanks
for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.

"I Loved You "
I loved you from the very start, You stole my breath, embraced my heart. Our life
together has just begun, You're part of me my little one.
As mother with child, each day I grew, My mind was
filled with thoughts of you.
I'd daydream of the things we'd share, Like late-night bottles and teddy bears. Like
first steps and skinned knees, Like bedtime stories and ABC's.
I thought of things you'd want to know, Like how
birds fly and flowers grow. I thought of lessons I'd need to share, Like standing tall and playing fair.
When
I first saw your precious face, I prayed your life be touched with grace. I thanked the angels from above, And promised
you unending love.
Each night I lay you down to sleep, I gently kiss your head and cheek. I count your little
fingers and toes, I memorize your eyes and nose.
I linger at your nursery door, Awed each day I love you more. Through
misty eyes, I dim the light, I whisper "I Love You" every night.
I loved you from the very start, You stole my
breath, embraced my heart. As mother and child our journey's begun, My heart's yours forever little one.

How to really Love a Child
Be there. Say yes as often as possible. Let them bang on
the pots and pans. If there crabby, put them in water. If there unloveable, love yourself. Realize how important
it is to be a child. Go to a moive theatre in your pajamas. Read books out loud with joy. Invent pleasures together. Remember
how really small they are. Giggle a lot. Surprise them. Say no when necessary. Teach feelings. Heal your own
inner child. Learn about parenting. Hug trees together. Make loving safe. Bake a cake and eat it with no hands. Go
find elephants and kiss them. Plan to build a rocketship. Imagine yourself magic. Make lots of forts with blankets. Let
your angel fly. Reveal your own dreams. Search out the positive. Keep the gleam in your eye. Mail letters to God. Encourage
silly. Plant licorice in your garden. Open up. Stop Yelling. Express your love a lot. Speak kindly. Paint
their tennis shoes. Handle with caring. Children are Miraculous!

Childhood Doesn't Wait
I was sitting on a bench while in a nearby
mall, When I noticed a young mother with two children who were small.
The youngest one was whining, "Pick
me up," I heard him beg but the mother's face grew angry as the child clung to her leg.
"Don't hang on to
me," she shouted as she pushed his hands away, I wish I'd had the courage to go up to her and say...
"The
time will come too quickly when those little arms that tug, Won't ask for you to hold them or won't freely give
a hug.
"The day will sneak up subtly just as it did with me, When you can't recall the last time that
your child sat on your knee.
"Like those sacred, pre-dawn feedings when we cherished time alone Our babies
grow and leave behind those special times we've known.
"So when your child comes to you with a book that you
can share, Or asks that you would tuck him in and help him say his prayer...
"When he comes to sit and chat
or would like to take a walk, Before you answer that you can't `cause there's no time to talk" Remember what
all parents learn so many times too late, That years go by too quickly and that childhood doesn't wait.
"Take
every opportunity, if one should slip away Reach hard to get it back again, don't wait another day." I watched
that mother walk away her children followed near, I hope she'll pick them up before her chances disappear

If I had my child to raise over again
If I had my child to raise over again:
I'd build self-esteem first, and the
house later
I'd fingerpaint more, and point the finger less
I'd do less correcting, and more connecting
I'd
take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes
I'd care to know less, and know to care more
I'd take more
hikes and fly more kites
I'd stop playing seriously and seriously play
I would run through more fields and gaze
at more stars
I'd do more hugging and less tugging
I'd see the oak tree in the acorn more often
I would
be firm less often and affirm much more
I'd care less about the love of power
And more about the POWER OF LOVE. Author
